Petri Raisanen

Petri Räisänen (born August 13, 1967) is an internationally known and respected Ashtanga Yoga teacher.  He is a devoted student of his Guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009), who authorized Petri to teach, and Petri carefully passes on his Guru's exact teachings. 
Petri started practicing Ashtanga yoga in 1989 and teaching in 1991.  He is co-owner and director of Ashtanga Yoga Helsinki, one of the world's largest Ashtanga Yoga Shala's, which he founded with his friend Juha Javanainen in 1997.  Sri K. Pattabhi Jois blessed the school to teach the traditional Ashtanga method. 
In his yogic path Petri has studied with many other respected Ashtanga yoga instructors such as Derek Ireland (his first certified teacher), Radha Warrel, Lino Miele, Gwendoline Hunt, Eddie Stern and Sharath Jois, in addition to Sri K. Pattabi Jois. Petri focuses his teaching on integrating healing and therapy with yoga, meeting student's individual needs and guiding their progress.
Petri's adjustments are gentle, effective, therapeutic and, according to some of his students, almost magical. His touch originates, besides his own practice and teaching, from his past work as a traditional Finnish folk healer and naturopath. His friendly and relaxed behavior and precise perception gives a meditative, open and energetic atmosphere to his classes.
In 2004, Petri wrote the book "Ashtanga - The Yoga Tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois" in collaboration with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson, Sharath Jois. The book introduces the Ashtanga yoga method and philosophy, as well as its potential as a physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual practice. It is written as part of Petri's pilgrimage into Ashtanga yoga's inner word, with a great sense of respect towards his Guru and the Yoga Tradition. His second book (about Ashtanga Yoga's Intermediate series) released in Finnish and English, was also written in collaboration with Sharath and Pattabhi Jois.

Wambui Njuguna-Räisänen

Wambui Njuguna-Räisänen has been an Ashtanga yoga teacher and practitioner for nearly a decade. She was authorized to teach the Primary Series by R. Sharath Jois in 2016 and currently practices with Sharmila Desai at Ashtanga Yoga Morjim, Goa.
She began teaching Ashtanga yoga in 2011 at the Ashtanga Yoga School of Helsinki and leads workshops in Finland and Sweden. In addition, she co-teaches on workshops and retreats with senior Ashtanga yoga teacher, Petri Räisänen, who is also her husband. Together, Petri and Wambui approach the practice of Ashtanga yoga from a gently healing, inclusive and therapeutic perspective. Wambui edited the English version of Ashtanga Yoga: The Yoga Tradition of Sri. K Pattabhi Jois and translated (Finnish-English) Nadi Sodhana: Yoga in the Tradition of Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois. Many people have started practicing Ashtanga yoga using her Half-Primary series YouTube video, which has garnered more than 1.1 million views.
In addition to teaching Ashtanga yoga, Wambui also gives Chavutti Thirumal massage (by foot press) treatments, both in Helsinki and internationally, and applies aspects of energy healing and traditional Finnish bone-setting techniques into her treatments.  She has also assisted her teacher, Helen Noakes, on massage therapy trainings. Wambui is also a Yin Yoga practitioner and regularly guides meditation and chanting sessions on yoga retreats.
Wambui’s ongoing education has involved attending the Trauma-Informed Yoga Summit with Ashley Turner, Honor Don’t Appropriate Yoga with Susanna Barkataki. Wambui’s completed the following Off the Mat Into the World courses: Dismantling Racism with Michelle C Johnson; Healing Yoga for Refugees, Asylum-Seekers and Displaced People with Our Mala’s Emily Brett; and Yoga for Self-Regulation and Trauma; Trauma & Social Justice with Hala Khouri.
Operating at the crux of yoga, spirituality, intersectional feminism, sustainability, parenting, and social and racial equality. Wambui’s motive is to uphold a culture where wellness spaces are accessible, inclusive and welcoming and serve to unite all people towards collective evolution and liberation.

Course Description:

Goa retreat tittle 2020 Ashtanga Yoga - The Healing Meditation

Petri and Wambui will guide the students peacefully, safely and individually through the Ashtanga sequences as well as philosophy and healing techniques.

Weekly program: For the beginners there will be three guided beginners classes and two Mysore style classes with the teacher’s individual support.

More experienced students will have five Mysore style classes. On Fridays we offer a led primary series class for everyone. In the four afternoons there will be classes with changing subjects; yoga asana techniques, yoga therapy sessions, chanting (reciting the mantras), pranayama (breathing techniques), yoga philosophy and discussions. Yoga and yoga based film viewings every week.

On moondays (new and full) there will be a restorative yoga session with an emphasis on deep relaxation and integration.

The retreat is suitable for all levels, from beginners to more experienced practitioners.
